On September 7, the Omali Vida Nón project organized a meeting at the Santo Antonio Cultural Centre, Principe island. During this event, we discussed our work so far, including the presentation of preliminary results on fisheries landing surveys, mapping of fishing areas and socio-economic information, as well as presenting the new phase of the project entitled "Community Ideas". This project activity aims to promote community dynamism and support the implementation of interventions with a positive impact on the sustainability of artisanal fisheries through improved management of marine resources and benefits for fishers and fish traders. We created a fund of 100 million dobras (about 4000 euros) for each winning idea. This meeting was attended by representatives of the various fishing communities where we work, as well as local and national institutions, including the Directorate General for Fisheries. We have also presented the rules for this competition in the several communities, where several potential proposals have already been discussed. These Community Ideas must be submitted until 15th of October and we will then select the four winning proposals. We look forward to hearing everyone's ideas!

During the month of August, we worked together with Sonha, Faz e Acontece (Dream, Do and it Happens), a Portuguese voluntarism and social entrepreneurship association that has been working on Principe island since 2012. In collaboration with our project, SFA brought their training and entrepreneurship support to a fishing community for the first time. Praia Burra acted as a pilot area for possible expansion to other communities. For five days, fish traders and fishers participated in entrepreneurship classes where they learned how to evaluate and grow their business in a sustainable way. The next phase will be selecting and providing technical and financial support to the three best business proposals related to the generation of income in addition to fishing or sale of fish and / or increase in revenue from fishing or selling fish.
